 KALĀVILĀSA

ABOUT

Dhurries are traditional handwoven flat-weave rugs of India. The artisans working with Kalāvilāsa weave exquisite punja dhurries, which are the most sophisticated among the different kinds of dhurries. Built to last, they epitomize slow fashion with a life of at least 20 years. Started in 2012, Kalāvilāsa (a Sanskrit word which means “joy of arts'') is the brand of Forum for Rural Weavers, a not-for-profit company working towards the upliftment of artisans in central India.

ARTISANAL HOME DECOR FROM INDIA

Cotton punja dhurries are cool under the feet during summers and provide warmth in the winters, and the wool punja dhurries look elegant in the formal spaces. Kalavilasa always uses natural fibres in the dhurries designed and produced by it. In addition, woven cotton cushion covers are made using repurposed cotton punja dhurries.

ARTISANS

The artisans working with Kalāvilāsa belong to underserved communities living in the region. Most of them double up as farmers, mostly as sharecroppers. Weaving provides them cash, while farming helps them with grains. The talented artisans work with amazing precision, and weave geometrically perfect motifs on the dhurries.

Testimonials

Thank you! I could not be happier with my two new rugs! To be able to select the design, color and size- this is absolutely golden to me. Of equal value is your responsiveness and attention to detail, especially under my tight timeframe. Kudos to Kalavilasa's remarkable craftspeople for your inspired work and to Vivek, for your aspirations to keep traditions alive. Gratitude and best wishes!
